Eileen was the youngest of three children, so whatever interested her interested her parents. She was an avid reader at a young age and had read all of the Misty books by the age of 10, which is the year her Dad took her to Pony Penning week on Assateague and Chincoteague.
That was 1962, and her Dad wanted to meet the locals from Chincoteague who had appeared in the movie, and, of course Eileen wanted to buy a pony.
She was able to hold Misty by her halter with tiny Stormy on her side that same year, after her Dad asked if that would be okay. They went on a boat, and there was a picture taken of Eileen, at the Stern of the boat, with her back to all of the adults because her Dad had told her that he wasn’t buying a pony.
She got her first pony at 13, but it wasn’t a Chincoteague. and later she bought her first horse and has had her own horse ever since.
But, after that first visit and many visits thereafter, when she could drive, it was 42 years later when she bought her first Chincoteague pony at the annual auction. That pony, Taylor, turned 21 years-old this Summer (2024,) and she still lives with many more Chincoteague ponies purchased at the auction.
Fast forward to 2023 when she bred her 2020 Perlino stallion, Assateague’s King Milby, who she purchased from the first online auction. Her lifelong love for Chincoteague and her people and these ponies resulted in three beautiful foals so far, a 2014 Chestnut filly, named Nana Rose, a Misty descendant from Sire Misty’s Frostymist, Icicle’s first foal.
On April 18, 2024, a registered Perlino filly was born, and she is beautiful and a Misty descendant through her Dam, Misty’s Icicle. The 3rd foal, Hey Jude, an equally beautiful buckskin colt, was born on April 25, 2024.
It is these foals that are featured on this website, with two more foals expected next Summer. The 2024 foals are now for sale to approved buyers, and one of the foals expected next Summer will also be a Misty descendant.
These are exciting times at Barry and Eileen’s Institute Farm (named after a Learning Institute for Women in 1820) in the beautiful village of Bruington, Virginia. (King & Queen County)
